Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   Context 6698 is an external or outdoor floor surface, located to the North of wall 5562, East of wall 5677, South of rubble foundation wall 5678, and West of robbing trench 5802. A roof-tile built pithos (12th c.) was cut into its surface (= 5504). We are excavating this area to determine its relation to the area to the North (= 6696). Floor surface 6698 seems to be identical to the upper surface of 6696 - see notes for 6696 re: our excavation of the floor surface and the leveling fill in the same context. Context 6698 is considered an external floor surface because it is very compact and has small to medium sized pebbles, as well as horizontal tiles, on the surface.
We found a coin (2010-016) within the floor surface, near the SW corner. Upon removal of the floor surface, we have uncovered a layer of softer soil, with tiles and pottery arrayed haphazardly throughout - it seems to be similar to the leveling fill 6696. While sweeping for photos, we found another coin - it came from the Eastern scarp of the pit (= 5514) around the 12th c. built pithos. [NOTE, 17-4-10: NOT A COIN.]
The context was excavated "dry" because it had been exposed since the previous excavations of 2008.
