Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is coarse sand.
Notes:   Context 6703 is a leveling fill of dumped and abandoned material, both man-made and natural. 6703 = 6699 = 6696 -- all of the contexts were cut by wall 5678. The context 6701 was most likely a natural accumulation of clayish soil that collected in the area where the fill met the walls 5677 and 5562, within the fill 6703 = 6699. The Eastern boundary of the fill is unclear due to the robbing trench 5802.
The removal of fill 6703 has reveled sections of the marble tile floor, 5710, laid in the same pattern as was uncovered in the excavation of 6696. In some places, the fill ends on a more compact, thin, soil surface directly on top of the marble tile floor; we uncovered a similar compact surface over the marble tiles at the bottom of 6696. This compact layer is probably part of the early abandonment of the area, made compact by foot traffic, exposure, and the subsequent fill. The removal of context 6703 is complicated by the presence of the 12th c. built pithos and the related cuttings around it (5504 = pithos; 5515, 5486 = cuts). Cut 5486 is nearly unidentifiable at this point, although we have attempted to define its borders. The accumulated fill of 6703 (= 6699 = 6696) overlays all of the marble tile floor.
