Description:   The soil color is dark greyish yellow. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   Context 6717 is a fill located in the northwest corner of the room west of the courtyard of the Byzantine house. It was revealed during the excavation of contexts 6710 and 6714. Context 6717 continues beneath wall 5725 indicating it will also appear in the room northwest of the courtyard. The removal of context 6717 revealed an ashy layer in the corner of the room. We also hoped that the removal of 6717 would reveal the final part of a cut for a robbing trench running down the center of the room. However, this cut could not be clearly defined even with the removal of this layer.
The soil is dark greyish yellow silty clay with 10% inclusions (stone, tile, pottery, roots, bone).
As digging continued it now appears that context 6717 may represent the topmost fill in the robbing trench (now defined by cut 6720). This robbing trench is for a sidewalk associated with an E-W Roman road. The foundations for this sidewalk was revealed in the northern scarp of pit 5943. Context 6717 can also now be seen to cover most of the wesstern sid eof the room abutting wall 5724. Cut 6720 is not straight in the far southern part of 6717 and this may have also been the case in the northern half.
Additional Notes: SG (15/04/10)
With the delineation of the robbing trench with cut 6720, it is now clear that context 6717 is either not fill in the robbing trench of that part of it is and we mistakenly dug two separate context as one. If the latter was the case then these two contexts were nearly indistinguishable. However, it is more likely the case that this context (6717) was a fill overlying the western part of the robbing trench.
