| Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light pinkish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty clay. | |
| Notes: | 6774 was opened below 6755 and 6771 in the center of the room. Based on the large number of broken tiles, pottery and bone, the context is probably a dump. In the west there is an ash deposit, but the finds are no different than the rest of the context. The bones are quite weathered, suggesting that the fill contains redeposited dirt that had been sitting exposed for some time. Rock and tile concentration varies throughout the context, but the level and general character of the context was such that we dug it all as one unit. In the SE center of the room, Thanassis came down on two large marble blocks partially covering a hole; it may be a small well, but we still need to dig further to better define the context. Further observation suggests that the blocks may not be in situ. There is a good deal of space between the bottom of the blocks and the earth below them, after feeling down and under between the two visible blocks. We closed this context when we realized that a large part of it went underneath a section to the north. We will remove this northern context (6780) first before resuming in the area around the large blocks. | |
