Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey sand.
Notes:   We are excavating the compact surface 6777 in order to determine the nature and extent of the ashy layer that continues underneath. We are also trying to clarify the extent of NS wall 6765, over which part of the compact surface extends.
The soil of 6777is firm, clayey sand, with inclusions of small pebbles, some tile, pottery, and bone, and small flecks of charcoal and calcium carbonate. In some places, we are able to trace a partial continuation of the ashy layer underneath the compact surface (particularly along the Western boundary of the compact surface). In the South and along the Eastern boundary of the compact surface, we have come down on stones. One of these stones, in the SE corner, abutting NS wall 6765, is a worked limestone block, 0.58 x 0.44 m., with three rectilinear cuttings along one end, somewhat resembling a threshold block with a door jamb cut. Along the Western boundary, where the compact surface meets the ashy layer, there are several tiles that seem to be part of the compact surface but have the ashy layer both above and below them, so we have left the tiles to be removed with the ashy level. The tiles and ash might represent a hearth of some sort. After removing all of the compact surface, we will proceed to excavate the ashy layer (= 6778).
