Title:   Fill of Debris and Wall Fall
Category:   Deposit

Context:   6781

Date:   2010/04/20
Stratum:   25% inclusions: small-medium stones (avg. ca. 16-20 cm.), tile, pottery, bone, some small flecks of charcoal and calcium carbonate; soil was semi-compact and a mix of coarse sand and clayey sand
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven down to the NE. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is coarse sand.
Notes:   We are excavating context 6781 in order to clarify the Northern extent of NS wall 5431 and ascertain the relationship between 6781, to the North of EW wall 6775, and the pit to the South of the wall. The context 6781 is a roughly hemispherical fill of wall fall (from NS wall 5430/5431) and debris, uncovered during excavation of 6763.
The excavation of 6763 ended on a compact stratum that was whitish-brown in color. As we remove 6781, we are finding more of this compact white layer. Covering the Northern edge of the white layer is a very compact stratum of clayey sand that strethes to the East (where NS wall 5431 would continue North, but the stones/blocks are now missing). The Western edge of 6781 is a jumble of wall fall and fill, possibly associated with another NS wall that is present beyond the Northern border of the trench, extending North to meet with the hemispherical South wall of the "bouleuterion" of the South Stoa.
We closed context 6781 in order to excavate the very compact stratum (= 6783).
NOTE (J.P., 29.4.10):
The pottery from 6781 included four sherds of late 19th c. tableware. This clearly represents contamination, most likely from our Northern baulk, which was backfilled by O. Broneer, following the late 19th c. excavations in this area. This area was subsequently partially excavated in the 1960s as well. In order to prevent future contamination, we scraped back the Northern scarp and removed the backfill to expose unexcavated soil (see context 6809 for more information).
