Description: | The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes: | After digging context 678, we found the foundation trench of wall 366. The foundation trench cuts 678, but the current context (680) cuts the foundation trench of wall 366. This context (680) is a continuation of 642. In the N of the context coin #22 (E: 262.43, N: 1008.87, El: 86.38). The sieving of this area also produced coins # 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28. Ionic torus moulding fragment found (L: 0.14 m H: 0.06 m). A number of bases of Roman round mouthed pitchers found. Soil sample #1 taken from middle of N area of 680. Includes soil that was adhering to interior of recovered pot sherds - large body and base sherds and a fragments of a lamp. Soil in N portion is more red in color. At bottom next to wall 366 on E side, 3 cobbles appeared as fill in foundation trench of wall 366. 2 buckets of pottery. LATER INTERPRETATION (23 April 2012): After rain ~10 April, we noticed a distinct soil change within pit 642/680, which barrowman Pavlos had been digging during excavation of 680. This is a yellowish sandy soil with numerous small pebbles, preserved at present in the bottom of the pit on its NW side and on the NW slope above leading into the pit. This sandy pebble matrix is a single lense of fill which should have been excavated as a separate context, which was overlaid by 680. We believe most if not all of our coins from context 680 actually originated in this sandy deposit.
