Description:   The soil color is reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   The removal of 663 revealed an interesting stone feature (694) that we at first thought might some kind of furnace with a rounded interior. Surrounding the exterior of the stone feature was a reddish brown surface that we decided to remove first in order to better define the edges of structure 694. Many bits of charcoal were found and the eastern edge of structure 694 as well as part of the northern edge were well defined. However, most of the northern edge of the structure turned out to be floating stones, and as it would turn out 694 is actually a single North-South running wall. These loose floating stones may be fall associated with the structure.
The context situation below is confused. At least 7 different areas may be distinguished - 688, 689, 691, 693, 699, and 725, plus one hard reddish layer that we have not yet designated a context number. 691 is circular in shape and appears to cut structure 694.
The relationship of 682 to structure 694 is unclear. It would appear to postdate it, since stones of a similar size and shape to 694 are intermingled in it and probably represent a fall. On the other hand, 682's lower elevation is lower than the foundation of 694. The ceramic dates for both contexts are mid 12th c., suggesting that we can happily place the two of them in the same period of use.
