Date:   2010/05/12
Stratum:   15% inclusions: tile, pottery, pebbles, boulders (subrounded and tabular), bone.
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the SW. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   6909 was opened after excavation of 6905 reached that context's bottom. 6909 was excavated to help determine the relationship of the fills in the southern part of the room NW of the courtyard to the room itself. Excavation proceeded: a significant amount of bone came out of this context, which constrasted sharply with 6905, which yielded no bone. 6909 was closed when a layer of earth with more boulder inclusions was revealed at the west end of this context, abutting walls 5725, 5742, and 6905. This may be from a collapst of one of the walls, maybe 5742. However, we are ceasing excavation of the fills in this room to continue excavation of the fill inside 6991, as it was determined that enough room was freed up to comfortably pursue excavation and not have any contamination in the pithos fill. It should also be noted that the fills in the room NW of the courtyard of the Byzantine house, excavated 12-13 May 2010 (6898, 6902, 6905, 6909) are earlier than the fill in pithos 6991. 6909 may be a levelling fill in the room NW of the courtyard, but there is no evidence of a floor.
