Description:   The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is fine sand.
Notes:   Originally we thought that this context formed the interior part of W694, which looked as though it surrounded it in a neat apse shape much like a furnace. However, upon thorough cleaning 694 was found to be a North-South running wall with a chunk missing where this pit cuts the wall, making 691 later than 694. The contents of the pit were interesting and a soil sample was taken for the water sieve. An abundance of sea shells were present, along with charcoal and bones. The pit appears to be a midden - a dump associated with cooking. The ceramic date is Frankish, some 100 years after the construction of the wall, indicating that the wall was not long lived, so long as walls go.
