Description:   The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. It is clayey silt. Structure materials: tile, plaster, stones. Material size: avg. 0.13x0.10x0.03m. Material finish: n/a. Material construction: n/a. Material bonding: mud. Features: none.
Notes:   29-5-09: Structure 6991 is a tile built pithos found beneath wall 5725 which likely exists in both the rooms W and NW of the courtyard of the Byzantine house. It consists of tiles likely bonded together by some kind of mortar and was plastered on the interior. Its associated fill is 6512 and the cut for the pit in which it was constructed is 6513. It is located approximately 1.5m S of pit 6115 which was also likely for a pithos, but a later one. Structure 6991 was built into a surface on which appear to have stood several dozen white-ware kettles (these were found in the fills above, 6129, 6145, 6493). A similar tile built pithos was identified in the room N of the NW room (5505).
Additional notes: SG (12-4-10): The southern part of pithos 6991 was revealed during the excavation of pit fill 6583 in the room W of the courtyard. Much of this pithos had been truncated by the pit. It also appears that blocks from wall 5725 tumbled into the pithos.
Later notes: DPG 12-5-10: On 12-5-10 excavation of the fill in the built pithos continued (cf. 6880), afterwards it was determined that the fill of the pithos could not be investigated further without excavating the pithos structure itself. As excavation proceeded, it was apparent that the pithos was built of corbelled tiles, but there was no plaster on the tiles. However, a tile fragment was found with painted plaster (a greyish-black, solid), but this was clearly reused.
DPG 13-5-10: On 13 May, the floor of the pithos was revealed; it was comprised of tiles. After its removal, revealing a levelling fill of tile underneath, it was decided to remove the rest of the tile lining the pithos. As the tiles were being removed, it became apparent that a significant number of the tiles were entirely covered, on one side, with charcoal. Three fragments of tile had plaster on them (not from use in pithos), as well as painting over the plaster. 2 unworked pieces of marble were excavated from the tiles (0.17, 0.18m l.), one of which also has charcoal on it.
