Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the W. The soil color is dark reddish mixed. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   Context 7015 was opened to investigate a fill of burnt mudbrick located in the northern half of the room NW of the courtyard. The soil is a mix of light red and blackish-brown soil - probably a result of burning/destroyed mudbrick and charcoal. The deposit was truncated by 6881 (the built pithos) and pit 6115 and the foundation trench for wall 5562 (6971). It is bounded on the E by the rubble foundations of a wall running N-S (wall 7032), from which we believe the mudbrick came (superstructure), and on the SW by wall 10111. The destruction debris rests atop a floor surface, visible in the scarp from the removal of the built pithos (6881), which is also visible on the south side of the pithos cut and appears at about the same level as the bottom of the rubble foundations (7032).
A significant amount of iron was found in this context, apparently iron plating with nails through it, as well as mudbrick with plaster and plaster painted (green, yellow with white strip, and red and white), as well as a large shell. The painted plaster seems to have come from the walls, possibly 5562 and definitely the eastern and western faces of wall 7032.
A martyr of this deposit was left to support wall 6130 (S1037.60, 261.60; N 1038.20, 262.80), and a layer of cement (top: 83.49, bottom: 83.20; N: 1037.45-1037.56) was removed at the western limit of this context (between wall 10111 and 6130), although the purpose/function of it is unclear. Wells suggested that it could merely be a slumped deposit of cement; we did not treat it as an anthropogenic structure.
A plaster floor was uncovered at 82.93 elevation and it was decided to close the context to excavate the little plaster that had fallen from the walls to the floor, in order to completely uncover the floor. It appears from the scarp of the removed built pithos (6881) that the floor runs under the S/SE of wall 10111 and perhaps to the E of wall 7032.
A preliminary look at the pottery from this context by Sanders suggested a date in the 6C CE, although a firmer date will have to wait until sorting the pottery. As it was decided not to remove the floor, it is not possible to date this feature, but it may be related to the 4C CE layers excavated in the first session of this year (2010) by Gallimore in the room W of the courtyard.
