Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   7094 is an area of light yellowish brown soil with many large tile inclusions. The presence of these tiles may indicate a floor surface or perhaps the collapse of a shed roof in this area. We are hoping also to better understand the nature of structure 6820 and the stones to its west (7150). PK has revealed a collapse of rocks just to the north of 6820 -- it is possible that these were part of the upper portion of 6820 and the stones to the west, or collapse of another structure. In the eastern part of the context, tiles seem to be laid on one another, spaced evenly. Many of the tiles in the context seem to be lying at the slight angle, jutting out slightly from the soil and turned to NW-SE or NE-SW. Some of the tiles also are lying relatively flat. A small lens of ash is the west of 6987. We have both pan and cover tiles, and some in quite sizable chunks (i.e. .35 m wide and .03 m high by at least .33 m long) Because of the quantity of soil, we are now dry sieving 50%, but keeping all the tile. In his excavation, PK has noticed a harder layer near the north edge of 6820. The soil of context 7094 does continue deeper elsewhere. Just north of 6820, a limestone block lies under the context with scoring marks on the surface. These may have been marks for portioning, a game board, or indicators for cutting. The soil north of 6820 and west of 6821 is the same color, with the same inclusion, but packed down. We have decided to keep it as part of this context, as it is such a small area and is the same except for compaction. We have found a pan tile with width and length preserved (.36 x .72 m). We have found a cover tile with width and length preserved (..18 x .52 m) There seems to be consistency in width with other preserved pan and cover tiles. A this point we feel fairly content in the hypothesis that we are digging fill of collapse -- the presence of large tile fragment (and some whole), the positioning of some tile fallen face up, and the quantity of material all support this. GS has noted that the scoring on the limestone block noted above may be natural. PK has noticed that some of the fallen limestone blocks lie on top of tile inclusions.
4/6/10:
Excavation continues today. PK has found a surface under the collapsed tile, which may be a floor. GS has noted that the surface found is consistent with suimilar ones found in interior spaces. This supports our hypothesis of a roof collapse. We have now returned to seiving 100% as we have come onto the floor surface and inside the walls. Another floor surface, this one just west of wall 6789, is appearing. This is a hard packed clay surface, with charcoal inclusions. GS has noted that the thinks the stone with scoring marks may have been part of a paving stone for a Roman road. On the floor, PK found coin 2010-128 (271.84, 1042.69, 83.82). Another coin (2010-129) was found in the seive. The floor slopes from north to south -- we will include 2 elevations to account for this (S 83.84, N 83.95). The context has extended a bit to the west. Once wall 6821 has been cleaned, this floor may help us to date the wall. It seems that its robbing trench ended in this surface.
