Title:   Pit fill under 761
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1106
Context:   763
Page:   0
Date:   2012/05/03
Stratum:   40% tile, pottery, bone, iron, glass, bits of carbon, fine pebbles to cobbles (rounded and angular)
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silt.
Notes:   This layer in the bothros ended up being very shallow, and was therefore the lowest layer in the rounded pit. One coin was found in this context at N1012.58, E 268.46, and elevation 86.04, and one photograph (2012-223) was taken of the bottom of the pit after removal of the fill.
5.5.2012
This so-called "bothros" ended up being very shallow, and only extended for one more, shallow, layer before terminating. Therefore, despite the extreme roundness of the shape of its cut, this shallow pit should not be considered a formalized bothros.
24 May 2012: We now believe this is the continuation of the fill of pit C847, which was first identified in session 1 and partially excavated as 691. This interpretation is supported by photos taken during excavation, where the outline of C847 is clearly visible (see 2012-0215, 2012-0216, 2012-0219, and 2012-223), as well as by a join found between the lotted pottery from pit fill 691 from session 1 (lot 2012-12) and our context 756 (lot 2012-34). There may have been more joins present originally, but since the rest of the pottery from 691 has already been thrown, we are unable to pursue this hypothesis further. - RM/JM
