Stratum:   40% tile, pottery, bone, mosaic fragment, glass, piece of lamp, fine pebbles and cobbles (rounded, angular), shell, bronze wire
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the S. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silt.
Notes:   After the removal of layer 765, work continued to the east with 770 adjacent to wall 540, which Jonida thinks is most likely the most western portion of 765. Panos, however, pointed out that 765 contained a mixture of red and black material matching both the black material excavated as 770 and the reddish material underneath it that remains unexcavated, indicating that 765 was deposited after the pit cut both 770 and the material under it.
770 has an elongated shape that narrows down toward the south and finishing at the middle of pit 647. It formed a fairly level surface against wall 540, except at its very southernmost extent, where the elevation gradually descends. This starts to occur at about the point where context 218, a possible pit, was removed. It lies on top of the red layer, as does the fill from pit 784. The sediment contains tiny particles of lime plaster and few small chunks of carbon.
Layer 770 was previously assigned by the first session team no. 644; also 702 was given to a small context containing the excavation material directly surrounding a lamp stand and mug which eventually should join 644/770 or the context lying under it to the south.
During the removal of 770, the red layer was exposed underneath, and a strip ca. 10 cm wide of darker sediment next to the wall, probably a foundation trench for the wall 540.
Also, on the other side of the wall, the red layer was exposed, though at a lower elevation. A cut of much darker sediment came to light on the north part of the layer, abutting the wall 540.
24 May 2012: 644 was assigned to the southern portion of this context in the previous session of 2012. Contexts 218 and 649 were located near the southern end of this context in previous years/sessions. The stratigraphic sequence here is unclear, however, and has not been entered into the Harris Matrix accordingly. The pottery dates would imply that 649 predates 770, while 218 is roughly contemporary. - RM
