Description:   The soil color is dark brownish black. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This soft black soil sat immediately underneath the redeposited doorjam in the NE portion of the area. This fill is founded by Wall 540 on the E, and the cut measured as 816 on the W. This soft black fill contains a lot of roots. It is bounded on the N and S by areas of harded-packed red fill.
This deposit contained scattered lime deposits and was significantly darker once the soft light topsoil was removed. Near wall 540, 818 seems to come down on a reddish fill of tile. Foreman Thanasis suggested that this might be the remnant of a robbed out E-W wall, however, 818 goes further deep to the west. The soil also appears to be a mix of red and black at this level, but compaction and consistency are the same. The reddish layer may indicate the bottom of 818. In fact, the reddish layer seems to immediately overlay a large rectangular stone, at a lower level than the reddish tile layer noted above, but possibly a continuation of the same E-W wall.
When 818 was completely removed, it became clear that it did indeed overlay an E-W wall. This wall seems cut by wall 540.
