Notes:   EXCAVATION NOTES:
[recorded in field by Alicia Carter]
The removal of B65 revealed the W cut of this deposit. This deposit is v. different from the soil it cuts because it is very soft and darker in color.
Before excavating this context we spent time defining the cuts/boundaries better - particularly on the E side to make sure that this context does not lie UNDER the clay and stone feature - it does not.
We think this context may be the fill of a robbing trench because the cuts are linear and parallel, running N-S. We think this may be the robbing trench for the W wall of the clay and stone feature because the E cut of this context cuts the W edge of the clay and stone feature precisely where we hypothecize its western wall to have been.
The removal of this context reveals that the clay and stone block feature is founded on a cobble packing. [Later note: this cobble packing is the floor of the feature, interpreted as an oven, excavated with B90.]
This context was followed to the N all the way to the cut of the pit (cut of Pit = B71). The pit cut this context.
We close this basket when we reveal a new context inside these cuts that is different because it has inclusions of patches of black ash and orange clay. It is still very soft. This new context will be dug as a separate basket.
