Stratum:   Soil at the end of 17.5.12 was quite light and soft; then after rain that night, it was quite dark and firmer. Inclusions: pottery, mortar, marble, tile
Description:   The soil color is light black. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   18.5.12
This context was started just at the end of the work day on 17.5.2012. After overnight rain, the soil is much more hard-packed than it seemed yesterday. This context seems to be a continuation of the soft black fill of 840. 840 came down on a harder-packed black fill near the cut for the robbing trench, a hard-packed red that goes around and may underlie pit 842, and a soft black layer dug as this context. It is bounded in the east by the hard-packed red fill.
28.5.12
Excavation of 844 restarted on 28 May 2012 on the first day of Session 3 (recorded by Charles George and Heather Graybehl). The boundaries of 844 have extended past well 495 to the west, and the 1960s scarp to the North. The fill is a light brownish brown color, slightly different from what was described on May 18, due to the soil being more dry.
After several passes, the boundaries of the context were made clear. A hard white layer, possibly related to the exposed paving stones in the North of area, was exposed. A hard black soil was found in the East of 844, around pit 842, and a red soil was uncovered to the SW under the pedastaled area near the W scarp. We continued to make another pass of 844 within these boundaries. All boundaries are sharp. There appears to be no change in soil color or composition in between passes.
29.5.12
The soil color and composition remains the same as we dig further into 844. The reddish brown soil of adjacent contexts on the western edge is manifest.
12 Noon
There is sloping in on the northern and eastern edges of the pit with sharp definition all around. The soil on the context abutting the eastern edge appears more compact with less inclusions.
30.5.12
Today, on the fifth day of excavations for this context, we reached the bottom of pit 844. On the northern half of the pit bottom is the beginning of another circular context filled with the same soil color and composition and may be a well. In the northwestern side is a little hole in the platform containing curved tiles which may have originally surrounded the pit below 844. Heather hypothesized that the originators of the pit had created the slope on the eastern side with backfill in order to facilitate access to the bottom. On the southern side is a semicircular context, which was likely a circular context halved by the creation of pit 844 and therefore is prior to pit 844.
We decided to proceed to begin to excavate the now lofty platform overlooking 844 to its east lest it become any more difficult to excavate. However, we recommend that the circular context below pit 844 be excavated this season, as it may be the result of the same action of backfilling after the circular context (possibly a well) went out of use and therefore equal 844.
