Description:   Material bonding: Mud/clay.
Notes:   This is a N-S wall first discovered during excavation of context 849, though part of a roughly E-W cut associated with it (from 270.87 E, 1010.87 N, 86.70 H to 271.34 E, 1011.19 N, 86.35 H) had been visible since 837. The cut then turns to the N and was visible after the excavation of 849 until 271.36 E, 1011.36 N, 86.33 H. Additional courses appeared in the scarp of pit 856=C867. Its relationship to 864 is particularly important, since 864 is the fill of a vertical N-S cut (the W side of the cut along the wall's E face to the S?), preserved for only a short length (about 40 cm, from ca. 1013.00 N to ca. 1013.40 N at 270.65 E) immediately W of the wall's W face on the N end (270.70 E). Final coordinates have not yet been assigned to the wall, because its S, W, and E extent are not yet clear as of 4 June 2012. To the N, it is cut by Frankish pit 856=C867, then cut again by the scarp of the 1960's excavations, so that only a few stones (probably slipped somewhat from their original positions) lie between the NW edge of the pit and the 1960's scarp. So far, in the section of the wall visible in the scarp of the pit, we have found no traces of cement. The wall appears to be built of fieldstones and fragments of tile, randomly coursed, with mud or clay mortar.
