Notes:   [Later note: See B141.]
On the morning of 09 May, Guy identified on the west side of the pit/well (cut=B71) a deposit of soft soil which was cut by the pit and in turn cut all ofther deposits around it. This context was revealed by the removal of B65. It cuts into the cobble-rich soil to the north, and into a less cobbly layer to the west; it also cuts into the deposit revealed below B52 to the south (B82). Billy determined that this layer does not continue under the clay floor to the SE. From the side of B71 we can see that B87 goes down until it ends at the level of another clay floor (reddish clay, from the look of it). Bill began from the south and worked his way north. As he dug down in the north part of the deposit, he was no longer able to find the cut.
The soil where the cut disappeared turned orangish, so Guy believes that there was some overdigging. The dark grayish fill of B87 continues a bit further east around the rim of the pit than we originally thought, so Bill continued to dig it carefully in hopes of finding the cut there, which will hopefully help in reconstructing where about the lost part of the cut was.
After cleaning basket B91 was removed, we placed plastic on the bottom of the pit so as not to have to open another cleaning basket when more dirt spills into the pit from this basket or any other.
On all sides this layer gave way to more soft soil, but soil that was reddish in color. When we hit red we closed the basket.
Removing this basket revealed 2 or 3 stones which could possibly be associated with the robbed out wall immediately to the south of the "robbing trench" (B82). Now that we can see how this basket relates to the N-S wall, the best interpretation for this basket is that it is the fill of a robbing trench for this wall in this spot. The west cut of the robbing trench was defined during the excavation of this basket, but the E side of the robbing trench was truncated by the digging of the big pit (cut=B71). This robbing is localized here and this N-S wall does not appear to have been robbed at the same depth to the S or to the N.
