Title:   White Marl above Floor
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1106
Context:   905
Page:   0
Date:   2012/06/11
Stratum:   pottery, glass, tile, pebbles, iron, cobbles, bone, plaster; 20% inclusions
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   This is the white marl layer above the floor in the zone of the triangle. Iron nail recovered like others in the area. To the W, more tiles are being uncovered which look like a collapse. They mostly lie on their broad side (horizontal). Two more iron nails recovered. Tiles continue as you move further E and S but the number decreases very significantly. Very little bone has been recovered in this context. The floor certainly continues in the E beneath the marl layer. Small pebbles are visible here as well. A very nice glass base recovered here - thin stem. Another iron nail of similar type discovered. Plaster noticed in SW portion of context. Panos noticed two lamps mixed with the tile pile in NW of context. Coin found (E 269.32 N 1013.31 H 86.27). Unfortunately lost near table (E of C193 by about 1m, S of S baulk at 1009.50 about 1.5m). Coin of similar size found in sieve. Coin #134. Glass vessel in very large pieces clustered together in the space of about 10 cm between about 268 E to 268.50 E and 1014 N to 1014.40 N. Large joining amphora fragments from this vicinity as well beneath tile collapse. Started second bucket of pottery and switched to 100% screening because lead (?) ring (?) and glass are interesting. Found bronze hook in sieve. Coins 135 and 136 found in the sieve. Context left open at end of day.
12 June 2012: Two more coins found, 133 (E 268.64 N 1012.15 H 86.32) and 137 (E 268.21 N 1011.70 H 86.28). More glass has been recovered as well as a tessera from a mosaic. In the SW corner of the context near 849 the soil becomes harder and comes out with more difficulty as in 849 in this area, making it hard to distinguish between this context and the one below. If the floor continued in this area, it may have been disturbed by later activity. This is the end of the context. Photos 2012 588- 2012 590.
