Notes:   14 June 2012
We began excavating this context in attempt to date the structure (910), which this context fills in. The chronology of this possible fire pit or oven is useful to give a terminus ante quem to the lime pit. In fact the limey soil, found at the bottom of the the lime pit (under 917), W of structure 910, seems to extend underneath it.
The soil composition of 943 appears to be mainly made of ash, so we decided to take a soil sample to better understand what is the make-up of the ash in this context and if there were any carbonized botanical materials.
During the excavation of this fill we found some stones, few small pieces of bones and few sherds of pottery.

In the early morning we finished excavating this context. The fill excavated in this structure appeared to be made of a sigle layer, it was not possible to distinguish different phases of filling. This may depend on the low elevation of the structure, in fact it is 24 cm deep. Context 943 came on big pieces of tiles, which seems to be the bottom of structure 910.
Thanks the excavation of this ashy soil, we argue that structure 910 may be a hearth. The fill we excavated in 910 was rich in soil and carbon and very few pottery sherds and tiles were found in it. Furthermore the excavation revealed that the structure is 24 cm deep. All these aspects suggest that this structure might be used for building fire.
