Title:   Latest phase of clay floor
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1100
Context:   94
Page:   0
Date:   2007/05/10
Stratum:   Inclusions 20%: roots, bone, pottery, shell, stones (coarse pebbles, medium pebbles, fine pebbles). The first reaction to the color of the deposit is that it was light orangish brown but since 'orange' is not a Munsell color option, light yellowish brown
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the S. Bottom slope of the context is slight down to the SThe soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is very soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clay.
Notes:   EXCAVATION NOTES:
The clay surface on top of the black ash (which was later excavated with B97).
Removal of B94 revealed more of the black ash--it forms a rounded shape--and more of the secondary layer of clay surface first revealed under tile scatter B51 (the secondary layer of clay was later excavated as B102=B105=B106=B108). Under B94, this secondary layer of clay surface appears to the NE and SE of the black ash.
That the first layer of flooring (B94) is on top of a deposit of black ash that itself cuts another layer of flooring on which B94 also rests (B102=B105=B106=B108) suggests that there are multiple phases of flooring in this area.
In selecting the amount of the deposit to be water sieved, we alternated one shovelful into a plastic sack for water sieving, one shovelful into the barrow for dry sieving, until 50% of the total deposit was in the sack to be water sieved.
B94 may be of the same phase of flooring as B99 and/or B100 because both these contexts are also areas of clay surface at a higher elevation resting on the flooring excavated as B102=B105=B106=B108. But probably not because of other factors such as soil description. [Later note: B100 later made equal to B102 et al.].
