Context:   95

Date:   2007/05/15
Stratum:   70% inclusions, rounded subrounded, and angular cobbles, tile frags., some medium and coarse pebbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the NW. Bottom slope of the context is slight down to the NWThe soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is well sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   There are several lenses of fill to the NW of the pit (cut of pit = B71) which we are digging as stratigraphically as possible. Most of these are smallish patches of very different composition and definite boundaries. Because of their size and compositions, we interpret them to be dumped debris.
B95 is a deposit of cobbles that cuts a low-inclusion deposit on its west, and a very silty deposit to its east, and either cuts or overlies a low-inclusion deposit to the north. It is our expectatoin that removing this deposit will help to determine how best to procede in the NW sector of the excavation area as it will reveal the boundaries and relationships between these different deposits below.
As Bill dug down, large cobbles became fewer, but they did continue to appear; however, as long as the soil itself did not change, we continued to treat it as the same basket. Bill reached a level where the soil changed and became very soft. There are still large cobbles visible in the soil, which must be from a different context (perhaps the same deposti of cobbles visible on the inside of the the pit/well B71?). We are closing the basket and proceeding to the next fill in the stratagraphic sequence in this area: the silty soil to the NE (excavated with B96).
