Name:   South Stoa, context 24
Area:   South Stoa
Context Type:   deposit
Title:   Red and Rubble fill in SE quadrant
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1109
Context:   24
Date:   2015/05/07
Lot:   Lot 2015-054
Stratum:   60-70% of soil ranges from cobbles (mostly) with some boulders. Mostly subrounded clasts
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   Characteristics: The context above had red soil, sterile, sterile, and tightly compated. Context to the north has brown soil without cobbles-boulders.
Relationships: earlier than 15, cut by south wall and cut 16, below level of 17.
Top plan drawn.
This conext is a level of fill with rubble and tiles- subfoundation floor for the mosaic. We began at north end of N-S wall (N.B). We have now sectioned the room along the west side of theN-S wall. We believe that this context overlays another layer of tiles due to a raised elevation of a few cm. We are looking for the robbing trench. There is a small lens of marble revetment (context 25) abutting this context. It seems that the tile found directly north (also below contex 15) does not continue. The linerar layout of the tiles reveals a sharp distinction between the two contexts. The room is sectioned along the W edge of the exposed wall (see drawing), which truncates this context. When we revisist the W side of the wall, the two contexts will be even in the Harris Matrix. We are coming down to a compacted brown soil which is the same found in the arranged tiles found directly north. One block with evidence of plaster, probably reused from nearby construction. One smooth edge. North side of context is revealing tiles found to its eastern and northen edges. Brown soil revealed to west side. This shows a clear relationship with its northern edge, and a different relationship as we approach the N-S wall to the west. Brown soil without tiles fills it more and more to the west up to the "wall edge." extending from corner of the N-S wall and the bench is a compated clay and ash floor. Sitting on top of the floor parallel to the N-S wall is a rectangular marble block (A XXX XXXX). Coin elevation 81.50, see plan for location.

A second coin came from the sieve. The floor surface of "clay and ash" is over the entire area and we suspect it is a construction floor for the Roman remodeling or possibly associated with the Greek areas of the Stoa on the east end of the couch it runs right up to the south wall indicating that it was cut through by that wall. The surface slopes to the north and a softer layer of slightly darker soil without rubble that may be a robbing trench for the E-W wall. It seems to continue under a lens of flat tile between context 24 and 28. Note that the division of 28 and 24 was largely arbitrary. I suspect that they served the same function- structure of the mosaic.

Another coin was found in the seive. The context was closed in the morning of May 11.
