Context Type:   deposit
Title:   Cleaning of dark soil near west wall
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1110
Context:   284
Date:   2016/04/05
Stratum:   20% inclusions, small stones ranging from gravel to 10 cm in size
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey sand.
Notes:   5/4/2016
The soil is modern fill in an area along the western wall of the room, mainly concentrated along the center of the wall in a rectangular area. The material is sparse and mixed--little pottery, soda cans, glass, a few bones, wall plaster. On the eastern side of the deposit, the soil color indicates the edge between this deposit and the continous one--284 is dark brown, the other(287) is reddish.
In the southern area of the deposit, there are small roots running through the soil, especially against the face of the west wall. The soil in this area is particularly dark and fine--also where this deposit is the deepest. The reddish soil of the underlying material (298) slopes downward to the north from the south wall. There are many fewer inclusions in this area of the deposit (unlike the surface of the deposit, material mentioned above)--very few stones, almost no cultural material. Because of this differences and the fact that this black layer runs under the red layer, it is clear that this black layer is not part of the baza originally dug which was producing modern material, and therefore a different deposit. We therefore stop digging it and close the context.

Upon examination, it is determined that there remains some of the modern (can + bottle containing) material overlying the red and black deposits further to the east of the area excavated yesterday. We therefore continue excavating this context rather than closing it. The modern material continues to directly overlie the black soil across the area, with the bounds continuing to be defined by the cut through the red soil. The context ends up being roughly rectangular, sloping upwards to the south where the black soil rises.
