Context:   338
Date:   2016/04/12
Stratum:   light pinkish brown firm sandy silt with inclusions of small rocks, ceramic and marble pieces
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven down to the SE. The soil color is light pinkish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is well sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We open this context to begin the cleaning of the area to the E of the Broneer Sondage (Room 4R) to find the floor surface found in the W area (see context 335). The soil is a pinkish/red brown-gray sandy silt. As this fill is removed in the southern half of the context, we find traces of the same(?) surface found in the W (elevation of surface in W is 81.54, and here it is 81.59). There are small patches of the same cement and also whitish lime. Bounding this to the (immediate) N and W is a patch of clay-ey soil with charcoal inclusions-- the visible border of this is semi-circular in shape; suggesting it could be some sort of pit. In addition, along the E edge of this context bordering the wall which forms the boundary of Rooms 3 and 4, is a 25-30cm strip of cement mixed with fill and larger inclusions (tiles and rocks). When the S scarp of the area is examined, chunks of cement/concrete are clearly visible. It is suggested this is a part of a wall contemporaneous with (or in some way related to) the Late Antique/Roman wall to the W of our area. We close this context to more carefully remove the remaining fill over the surface.
