Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the NW. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey sand.
Notes:   Characteristics: harder, paler, and clayeyer than 28
35 is being excavated as its own context since cuts were found along the east and west that may be cuts made for robbing trenches or foundation trenches. 35 seems to sit directly on bedrock in parts, to which point the soil is being excavated. This is a fairly homogenous layer that runs up and over the opening of the well. It appears that the context goes all around the curved block of the well head. On the N side there is only about ca. 10 cm of soil above bedrock. Two coins from sieve closer to the well there is another surface. [a 10 cm martyr was left on north wall]. This surface appears to be made of a similar material as this context. We did not record this as a true surface because it is so uneven that at best it is probably a subfloor associated with the well or large fill across the whole NE area.
May 13: the boundaries of the context are clear on the N and E sides and more diffuse on the S side. The W side appears to be cut into by context 37. We dug it in order to install the wench to dig the well. There is a good cut on the S side running from the pit to the W so that we now appear to have a roughly square area around the well. This context uncovered a large area of bedrock on N side of well and a packed surface on other sides along which are cuts for walls. There is a deeper and darker patch of soil to the E of the door.
