Description: | Structure materials: well head consists of a single limestone block. Material finish: roughly hewn well head substructure. Material bonding: none. Features: well head.
Notes: | This well (well VI) was cut into bedrock during the original Greek construction of the South Stoa. It seems that the contexts that overlay it (35 and 31) were part of leveling deposits placed for later renovations. There is a limestone well head substructure sitting atop the well on its west side. It is roughly hewn and the east edge is rounded to follow the curve of the well opening. It is approximately 0.75 x 0.35 cm. About 28 cm below the opening of the well at the surface (bottom of context 35) one hand hold was found. It was on the east side of the well and was about 20 cm long and 10 cm in width and 8 cm deep. It was cut into the bedrock. Another hand hold was discovered on the west side of the well (around the west side). It was 70 cm from the surface (bottom of context 35), 22 cm long, 10 cm tall, and 8 cm deep. 40 cm below the second foothold another foothold was found on the south side, 20 cm length, 10 cm height, 8 cm depth. On the interior there are scrape marks (non metal) on the sides from its initial excavation.
