Stratum: | inclusion with primarily medium-sized stones (c.5-10 cm)
Description: | Top slope of the context is slight down to the S. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy clay.
Notes: | 19/4/16 This deposit represents a further pass through the stony reddish fill in the center of the room, previously dug as 424. In the scarp of 298, it appears that this final pass should be c.5-10 cm deep to reach the very cobbly packing that is exposed in the scarp and that also occurs in Room 2R. The deposit is quite compact. There is a relatively high concentration of pottery--the identifiable material in the field all appears prehistoric. As with 424, there is very little bone. There are multiple chert and obsidian tool fragments. The cobble packing is only exposed in the SW area of the context. Further east and north (at a slightly higher level), there are one or more compacted deposits of clay mixed with small stones. In the NE corner of the context, 438 covers a very clean clay deposit which may turn out to be part of the red clay deposit into which 438 cuts. 438 exposes the bottom of the red clay deposit (449, unexcavated) into which it and other fill layers (411, 398) had cut.
