Stratum:   light reddish/orange brown silty sand; relatively loose; some charcoal inclusions
Description:   Top slope of the context is moderate down to the W. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We open this context to remove the rocky fill in the NW corner of 4R(E), and extending about halfway down the western edge (i.e. the border with the Broneer Sondage). As we begin to excavate, Thanasis indicates his belief that this is part of a foundation trench for a wall (to the W), also noting that the rocks remaining in a line after the excavation of context 446 are on line with these rocks. The fill is loose and a light orange brown silty sand, and it addition to sizable rocks, there are pieces of rooftile (-- the large inclusions somewhat parallel context 369, the N foundation trench for the late wall). We are still not sure if this context indeed represents part of a foundation trench-- if so, the wall has clearly been robbed out (as it would have been located in the Broneer Sondage). It seems unlikely that Broneer himself excavated the hypothetical wall, as he left to physical indicator that he did so. It does raise, however, the possibility that a reason he excavated (and then backfilled) the area known as the "Broneer Sondage" is that he was in fact excavating the robbing trench for this wall. More research into his records may be needed to resolve this.
A later note that now pottery from Context 473 may be of help interpreting the sequence of events here?
