Stratum: | angular to rounded spherical to tabular medium and coarse pebbles and cobbles, bone
Description: | Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is light brownish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes: | we removed this context after 526 because it lay under the cobbles and above the surface under 521 and the surface that ran under 525/526. we initially hoped that removal of this context would reveal another side of the cut (visible in the NW and bounding the cobbles) that the cobbles seem to have filled (perhaps the pebbly layer also fills that cut?), but removal did not reveal another side. Most likely the cut was truncated by 497 and 301 and lost. A bit later we thought that the other side of the cut might be visible at the east end of the deposit, running parallel (N-S) to the other side of the cut in the northwest. The cobbles visible in the soil left for karkanas roughly follow the line of this hypothetical other side of the cut. Such a tidy rectangular cut might make sense for a courtyard or workspace as Guy suggested for the interpretation of the cobbles-- the cobbles would have been firmly in the ground, with soil laid on top of them. We still think that the cobbles are too angular and variously sized to be a courtyard, however. While excavating this context we began to think that the cobbles and 527 were redeposited fill laid down by the builders of the stoa.
