Title:   Fill of E-W Robbing Trench, 1st level
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1109
Context:   54
Date:   2015/05/18
Lot:   Lot 2015-056
Stratum:   20% coarse pebbles, 30% cobble, some carbon and tile chunks (<10%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This context is being excavated due to the difference in soil between both context 46 - a surface - and context 35 - also a surface. There is a definitive cut into both 35 and 46 that creates the E and W boundaries of the context (54). The soil is much looser, with larger inclusions. Due to both the loose and inclusion filled nature of this context and its location. It is thought this context is the robbing trench of the E-W original Greek wall. The boundary on the east side of this context is created by the cut of context 1/3, and cleaning context __________. As the excavator moves west, it is expected that the question of whether or not the north-south robbing trench (37) and this RT (54) occurred at the same time will be answered. There will be boundary - a clear cut - or it will continue into 37. 37 and 54 were due separately because of the different contexts that overlaid them, and the subsequent inability to find the boundaries of 54 until both surfaces of 35 and 46 were revealed. There is also a cut along the west wall of shop VII (38). That is thought to be the foundation trench of the North-South wall, and perhaps some pieces of it will be found while excavating 54. Blocks of the north-south wall found underneath 37 are partially hidden under a martyr left while digging 37, and perhaps the eastern edge of these blcoks will be found, or there is a possibility that deep blocks of the east-west well will be found, although it is unlikely. This context is dug in separate passes, the first of which is roughly 10cm deep, in order to find the west boundary clearly.
The cut on the south side has become clear at a slightly lower level where it cuts into bedrock. This does raise the question of the nature of the soil revealed by context 46. Similarly there is a good cut on the north side. On both sides, the cut is more difficult to detect on the west side. We are leaving a martyr on the east side against the pit (45) and cut 16. We found a coin at 81.30.
N.B. There is a consistent amount of small pieces of ash in the soil.
May 19: There is a good cut into bedrock on the north-south sides. We are leaving martyrs on east and west ends to prevent contamination. We will close this context and continue with 60 in this area to see if there is a diffference within the two levels of the robbing trench despite the lack of soil change. N.B. the surface to the south of the context appears to sit on bedrock and is very brown and pebbly with flecks of carbon judging from the fresh scarp.
