Title:   Martyr on top of snails deposit
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1110
Context:   553
Date:   2016/05/30
Lot:   Lot 2016-036
Stratum:   40% spherical rounded and tabular angular coarse pebbles, relatively abundant malacofauna, some bones and sherds.
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. The soil color is light brownish yellow. The soil compaction is weakly cemented. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   8.29: Work started on the sectioning of an area in the S-SE corner of shop 2 Rear. This area was left unexcavated in session 1 in order to be analysed by Takis Karkanas of the Wiener Lab in session 3. In order to do so it was decided to section half of it in order to provide a profile. The main feature in the area is a deposit of snails contained in what seems to be a cut in a lower deposit. Following instructions by field director Smoothermann I created a line that separates in two halves the excavation area, using the face of 502 as base line and drawing from there at 90 degrees angle. The middle point was determined by calculating the length of a martyr left on top of the snail deposit and dividing it by two. The martyr is a remain of context 500 which will be renumbered and equated to the previously excavated context. With regard to the area to excavate the west side of it was chosen, since it will ease the access of the students of the fieldschool of Karkanas, and leave the foundation area of wall 459 for further analysis.
9.40: After Sanders instructions the excavation area was shifted from the West to the East. The reason for this is that to the West side the area was underexcavated during Brooner's works and now it is in menacing of collapsing. A line was set and drawn at 90 degrees as described before, and the first photographic record took place under the supervision of Herbst. Now I will proceed to the cleaning of the whole area before starting the excavation of the martyr.\
11.17: Once cleaning and photographic record was finished I proceeded to record the top elevation with the help of Smoothermann at the theodolite. Line was set and excavation started from the NE of the deposit towars the line, starting with a first pass of trowel along the line; being a martyr the blade was inserted on its profile and the soil removed from the bottom up in passes of c. 0.020.
12.19: After two passes on the deposit a ligh rain stopped work for 10 minutes. Several issues arose already due to the fragmentary nature of the deposit. After removing some fragments of the antropic surface the "snails" deposit appeared, forming an "artificial" cut with the rest of the deposit to the E of about c. 0.030. My interpretation is that I am dealing with the contact surface while in session 1 they removed the upper part of the deposit with the previous deposit. When compared to the "snail" deposit on the W the picture looks more consistent.
The second problem was a slightly larger coloration of the soil on the NW. In the point of contact between the martyr and the bedrock soil composition was the same so I interpreted that was the same soil but wetter. I have been informed of heavy reainfall in the previous weeks that accumulate there, so I decided to carry on and excavate it as the same context.
13.03: End of the excavation of the deposit. The interpretations from the last paragraph were confirmed and a deposit with the snails revealed, that is in a cut that does not touch the bedrock, which is consistent with other deposits visible in the area. Finishing record of the deposit. 1 basket of soil removed total.
