Stratum:   pottery, quite a few cobbles, small bits of clay, several pieces of conglomerate incl. one 27 x 17 x 8 cm, medium to coarse rounded (very few) to angular spherical to tabular pebbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the SE. The soil color is dark brownish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   this context is, we think, part of the same filling action as 583 and 580, but the soil is different: it is darker and softer than 580. it is both cut by and overlaid by the pit 579; towards the west it is unscatched, but towards the south it is cut such that a strip survives, running along the edge of broneer's sounding (cut 301).
7/6/16- we continue excavating this context.
Finishing this context revealed a surface preserved at the bottom of the bedrock steps and a soft, dark, rocky fill beneath it, exposed where the surface wasn't preserved.
