Title:   Cobble fill of mosaic statumen in SW quadrant
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1109
Context:   79
Date:   2015/05/22
Lot:   Lot 2015-054
Stratum:   30% cobbles, 20% coarse pebbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   Characteristics: More cobbles than 72
This context was excaated seperately from context 72 because its main inclusions were cobble and not tile. This does appear, however, to be part of the same statumen layer for the mosaic.
Excavation is revealing the same soil as context 72. In addition, context 79 appears to be coming down on the same surface as 72 did - a compacted, coblle free soil. As of now, the cobbles seem to be almost sitting on the soil below, but it could very well be part of the same context. Soil beneath the cobbles at the west edge of the context seems different, as it appears to be dark brown and more compacted. The area in the eastern half of the context is more cemented and harder to pick through, though there still seems to be a high amount of cobble inclusions which is found throughout the rest of the context.
Further excavation revealed that the compacted surface beneath the cobble fill is likely a floor. Several carbon deposits found at this level seem to aid this interpretation.
22-05-15: In the SW corner of this context a higher concentration of pottery is being excavated from a lens of tile.
In the SW corner about 10 cm off from the NS wall a drain was uncovered. It appears to run in from the south east towards the north west at approximately a 60* angle. We are thus going to close context 79.
Exposed drain dimensions: 0.50 m x 0.30 m x 0.40 m. It runs under the Roman bench on its west side out to behind the south wall of the stoa.
At the NE edge of the context (directly north of the uncovered drain, another hole much like the first drain was uncovered, even though the original drain does not appear to connect with it. Some tests were done, however, and it does connect, though its endpoint is still unknown (see top plan for this context).
We have also uncovered cuts in the floor surface on the south and east edges of the context. So far it appears that the floor surface was north, past the EW wall and that there is no cut on the north side in this context. We will continue digging north parallel to the east wall until we (likely) will find the robbing trench. The soil in the north area is looser and the cobble fill is less cemented.
The surface uncovered at the south end is different from the floor. The soil is redder and softer, unlike the yellow/grey clay of the floor surface, however we are unsure what it is. Further excavation revealed it is the cut fro the top of the drain channel that runs EW on the south edge of the context. It will be excavated as a new context (85).
NB the floor surface runs directly up to wall 44 - there is no discernible cut along the south edge of the wall.
