Stratum:   30% large angular cobbles; small subrounded pebbles; ceramics and tile; occasional bone
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is light brownish black. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We have turned to the area in the southeast by structure 94. We are bounded to the south by our section line. Not This appears to be the softer layer also revealed by Deposit 172. It was also previously revealed by Deposit 152 closer to Structure 94. This softer layer maybe on top of the pebble surface revealed by 173. Not only was this the next layer to be removed, but we wanted to explore the exterior of Structure 94 to find what layer it sits on.
At this time, it appears that this deposit, 180, was laid against Structure 94. The formation/interpretation of this layer is difficult. It is more liely a fill since it is softer than the other surfaces found, but it is harder/more compact than a fill of a pit. It may have been dumped into this corner and then packed by foot traffic but not placed as a intentional surface of the courtyard. As we began removing this layer by the structure, some courtyard surface upon which Structure 94 sits was found, but only partially. To the north it was cut by some later activity.
Continuing to excavate the eastern half it became clear that this may be more fill similar to Deposit 167. It is possible that there is a fill with at least two lenses. One is a clayey lens that is more hard packed and the other is very soft balck loose with bones, shell and carbon. It is possible a major dumping action took place. We are thus treating the lenses as one deposit and removing them all at the same time.
The next courtyard surface that is hard and has pebbels has been revealed but in patches. While it is a flat surface in the western part of our sectioned area, it takes a dive part way to the east. This is partly due to the two large cuts in the surface, although their sides and botoms appear to be the same. The cut closer to the center of the area does appear to be a pit. The one in the south is more like a depression.
We have decided to close this context as we have come to the conclusion that there are some harder surfaces. Their exact relationship with the various fills are still complicated. At this time we have decided to remove the fill of the more pit like feature that was revealed. This will hopefully shed some light on the relationships of the surfaces and fill as it may tell us which surface this pit was cut into. Unfortunately the northeast corner of the courtyard remains difficult to understand, both in formation and stratigraphical relationships.
28/4/14:
As noted above, Deposit 180 revelaed the floor upon which Structure 94 sits. We were not able to excavate this surface because we reached the end of the session. It should be noted that the main reason for sectioning the courtyard was to explore the construction, date, and interpreations for the structure. Work in the future should return to this area.
