Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 364

Title:   Post hole in Corridor, 4th from W
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   364
Date:   2014/05/21
Stratum:   10% inclusions, primarily coarse pebbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is well sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   While removing Context 346, a depression appeared to contain softer soil than the surrounding matrix. We excavated it as Context 364. It appears to be another in a roughly horrizontal line of post holes running across the S half of the corridor. This particular post hole differed from the other three that have so far been excavated because its fill was comprised of a nearly uniform (no inclusions) matrix of loose, dark reddish-brown dirt (sandy, feeling like humus). We sent the entire three liters fill for flotation, wondering if the post may have decayed in the hole, turning into the fill. We aren't sure if any post remains (phytolites) could be recovered this way, but we saved the sample nevertheless. As for the line of post holes, we are unsure if the two to the E, which are significantly deeper than the two to the W, are contrmporary with the latter. We also question the function of the posts. Were they support for a slanted roof covering part of the courtyard? Were they support for scaffolding?
For more on the post holes in the Corridor, see Cut 333.
