Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 41
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Foot path - back fill
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   41
Date:   2014/04/10
Stratum:   10% small angular and rounded cobbles; Two soils present in the backfill - a dark brownish red and a dark greyish brown
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven down to the SE. The soil color is dark greyish mixed. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We have decided to remove the foot path that runs roughly NW-SE through the western part of our excavation area (West of Unit 2, Room A and east of Area 3). It is possible that this material is backfill and then later compacted by modern foot traffic through the NW passage. It seem to abut the cobble metal road (Deposit 36). We have arbitrarily chosen the southeastern boundary to remain in the area west of Unit 2, Room A. There are some areas where the soil is more greyish black than the reddish brown. Reading through NB 839, it appears that the area in the north was dug in 1995 (Basket 76 pg 135-7) and ater backfilled, confirmed by the modern trash found in the soil. The small cluster of stones south of the vaulted chamber seem to have more as they continue to the west, revelaed by the backfill. There also appear to be large fragments of stone, possibly marble, including 1 large (preserved: 0.55 x 0.36m) concave fragment, with roudned edges preserved. Moving north within this passage, more stones were revealed. The narrow foot path has been cleaned out and we have moved north, west of wall 1 to remove more back fill. This is more likey the area of NB 839, B 76, while the path was excavated by another group as it lies in grid square 83E, to the south and west of the vaulted chamber.
11/4/14:
We are continuing to remove the backfill. Looking through the notebooks, the small channel filled with stones in the south half of this deposit was previously identified as a Frankish/later water channel, possible a drain (NB 880, pg 79 for final plan). If this is true then this water feature cuts through the series of roads that are west of Unit 2, Room A. We have removed all the backfill throughout the NW passage. The water channel is limited to the south half of this deposit, while the north there are no stones. This north area relates to B. 77 (NB 839) and the south is B. (NB 880).
Later notes (15/4/14) SMK:
We believe that this backfill has uncovered the capstones for the drain rather than the drain itself. The cut for this is more likely an attempt to clean the drain than the foundation for it.
