Notes:   Continued work on the lime pit NW of the Frankish church narthex and W. of room 5 in unit 2. Partway through cleaning the lime pit on 8/4/14 foreman Thanassis identified a definite separate fill layer for the pit. We decided to remove the fill and sieve, hoping to find small coins. This fill layer probably reflects an initial deposition into the pit following the museum's construction in 1938 and reflects only a portion of the lime pit, as the northwestern portion is inaccessible due to a tree and the eastern portions were excavated in 1995 (NB 873, 48-49). It may however reflect later depositions. There is a great deal of instrusion from tree roots. Halfway through sieving nothing of interest had come up so we decided to stop at 50%. The fill sloped from 85.94m at its west end down to 85.55m at the E. end where the pit opened up to the previously excavated areas in room 5 (NB 873). Small finds included metal nails and animal bones, the former perhaps supporting the possibility that this fill dates to the museum's construction. We can only excavate the southern half of what remains of the lime pit due to a desire to protect the tree in the northern portion, whose roots have thoroughly intruded the fill of the northern section of the lime pit.
