Corinth Monument: Gymnasium
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Monument
Name:   Gymnasium
Description:   The Gymnasium mentioned by Pausanias was thought to lie at the northern edge of the city where several inscriptions dealing with athletes and athletics have been found. Excavations during the 1960s and 1970s to the south of the Asklepieion revealed part of an early imperial L-shaped stoa which is believed by some to be part of the gymnasium. Another idea is that it was part of a colonnade surrounding a large Doric temple perhaps dedicated to Zeus.
