Description: | Pelike with ovoid body tapering in continuous curve to wide concave neck, which turns out horixontally to thicken rounded lip. On upper surface of lip sharp articulation eith interior neck. Two vertical strap handles attached to upper shoulder, curving up, then down against side of neck. | |
Decoration: | Lower handle stumps partly encircles by tongue pattern banfds. On Side A, Apollo stands at center, wreathed, facing left. Only head survives. At right the head and shoulders of a woman facing left remans. She wears a chiton, himation, and sphendone, and carries a laurel branch. On Side B, a maenad stands between two silens. At left stands a large sprouting thyrsos. The left, bare-chested silene (missing below waist) faces right and raises his right arm toward the maenad's head. She faces right, wearing chiton, cloak, and sphendone, and carrying a thyrsos. Only her head and shoulders remain. At right, the second satyr (head only) faces left, piping. On both sides detail rendered in dilute glaze and relief lines. No relief contours. Hair contours reserved. Pattern band of oblique palmettes above both scenes. Interior of neck glazed black. Wash fire red on interior body. | |
