Description:   Fragment of an Attic red-figure lekythos with a cylindrical body, straight sloping shoulder sharply articulated from body. 1978: additional joining fragments of cylindrical body.
Decoration:   Red figure decoration: on the shoulder is a palmette and bud decoration. On the body at junction of body and shoulder is a reserved band with maeander and saltire-square pattern. main figural zone on body shows the head and torso of Athena, who stands facing left, head slightly inclined. In her left hand she holds her spear which rests on her left shoulder; in her right hand (missing) she holds her helmet of which part of crest preserved. Diadem in hair decorated with white dot and leaves on the headband and tied in a bow with a purple ribbon. Her hair falls in ringlets over her forehead and curves along the nape of her neck. In her ear is a circular earring. She wears a himation, the folds of which visible over right arm over which is aegis; scales on aegis in dilute glaze. 1978 additions give sleeve of chiton over left elbow, with crinkly folds in dilute glaze. More of himation covering torso, falling in three panels of stacked zigzag folds. Relief contour lines around palmette-bud motif, face of Athena, right forearm. Interior of lekythos not glazed. By the Berlin painter.
