Description: | Bronze spatulate implement with long shaft, circular in section, tapering to a sharp point at one end. At other end, shaft swells before narrowing and taperint to tear-drop shaped flat blade tipped at oblique angle to shaft. Similar to MF 1985 51. Resembles Jackson's "ligula" (R. Jackson, "A Set of Roman Medical Instruments from Italy," Britannia 17 (1986), p. 128, #28, fig. 4) or Davidson's spatulate implements in Corinth XII, pp. 184-5, #1336-1347, esp. #1342. May have been used like an ear or unguent spoon or for medical purposes. | |
