Title:   KNIFE WITH BONE HANDLE

Description:   Knife handle cut from single piece of bone. Slit runs lengthwise along back getting shallower toward base of handle, tiny frgt. of blade preserved within it at handle top, rivet hole pierces handle halfway down decorated portion. Bronze sheeting (L. 0.008) covers bone above decoration at point of junction with blade. Two small holes on each side of handle pierce bronze sheeting for attachment. Behind feline incision runs lengthwise handle. Form similar to marble table leg MF-9040 (Davidson 1952, Corinth 12, cat. 879).
Decoration:   Pedestal above deeply carved feline head which has prominent eyes below deeply carved brow, fanged agape mouth, triangular ears set back, chest curves outward and returns inward at belly above legs, deeply carved clawed foot.
Material:   Bronze, bone.
Condition:   Fragment. Two joining frgts., handle complete with bronze sheeting covering top portion at base of blade, causing green discoloration of bone. Head and body of lion badly worn, feet well-preserved.
