Description: | Handmade terracotta figurine of monkey, possibly grotesque. Round head with blunt features, deep-set eyes and puckered brows. Head tilts slightly to proper right. Wears short cap askew, made from applied clay disk. Mouth open with slight indication of nostrils above top lip. Incised line under jaw. Long body with large paunch and deep indentation for navel. Series of horizontal lines across abdomen suggesting wrinkles or flabby skin? Large haunches. Figure apparently seated on ground, with legs bent. Small projection at bottom of torso between legs: penis? Deep puncture hole at proper right hip, perhaps for holding mass of clay while modeling (according to Corinth 12). Object perhaps held in arms - a smaller monkey? Figurine solid. Back rounded but unmodelled. | |
