Description:   Torso of under life-size, archaistic statue of Hermes Kriophoros ("ram-bearer"); stiff frontal posture; both arms bent at elbows and brought in to chest, grasping legs of ram near hooves; ram slung over Hermes's shoulders, with its head at his r., facing front; Hermes is nude, with cloak hanging in back from both shoulders in regular, stacked swallow-tail folds. Hair arranged in two rows of snail curls framing forehead, long corkscrew curl on either side of head, held by low, plain diadem; bearded. Ram:large horns curling around ears, woolly coat carved with flat chisel. Figure engaged in back to flat pillar to shoulder height. Surface smoothly finished where preserved; rasp marks visible; flat chisel marks on sides. Closely related to Kriophoros in Wilton House collection.
