| Abstract: | The excavation of 1982 immediately east of the theater of Ancient Corinth has been a direct continuation of the investigations conducted in 1981, reported in Hesperia, 1982. Work this year included a test into a level of the Neolithic Period which was mixed with some Early Helladic I pottery, investigation of a Middle Geometric-Late Geometric I well, a pit of the Corinthian period and some Classical and Hellenistic levels, including, one deposit of miniature pots on a floor in front of a hearth. The Roman levels attest occupation east of the Theater from the 1st century after Christ down into the first half of the 7th century. After the 7th century a gap exists, apparently, until reoccupation in the late Byzantine period. The Roman levels have produced evidence for a destruction by fire in the middle of the 3rd century and a second destruction at the end of the 4th century, with its clean-up in the early 5th century after Christ. Because of the disturbed conditions in the area one cannot tell much about the use of land here before the Roman period. After the Roman refounding of Corinth the land use was both industrial and domestic, with stores or small workshops lining the north-south road east of the Theater. | |
