Two concentric circles on bottom: one inside feet, one on which feet arepositioned. Wide scraped groove at about mid-height (below decorated zone) and below rim, which is slightly inwardly thickened with top beveled to inside. Two pairs of large dolphins flank palmette with fronds curving towards center. Palmette is outlined in white and has white interior details. Between these groups are large palmettes with fronds curving outwards. Dolphins painted in silhouette, with interior details indicated by scraping away paint. Very micaceous, reddish yellow fabric (5YR 6/6); hard, lustrous red glaze (2.5YR 4/6--5/6), double-dipped, with black areas near rim.; ; For fabric and decoration cf. 1660, from same context.; ; Hübner (PF VII, p. 51) identifies the cup as an imitation of Pergamene appliqué, with the moldmade feet reflecting a Pergamene type (ibid., no. 35, p. 188, pl. 5); she suggests that it may have been manufactured in Asia Minor. Large-scale dolphins and palmettes occur on West Slope vessels at Pergamon (AvP I, ii, p. 273, Beiblatt 38:4; AvP IX, p. 120, pl. 57:h:7, 8, 10, 11, 57:i, 1; AvP XI, i, nos. 333, 428, pp. 151, 164, pls. 54, 59; PF II, D 39, p. 61, pl. 13). The combination of these two types of palmettes, in large scale, is found on Cretan West Slope vessels (Callaghan 1981a, no. 56, p. 55, figs. 4, 10; Belin de Ballu 1972, p. 114, pl. XLV) and Hadra hydriai (Guerrini 1964, B 25, p. 12, pl. III).","Agora","Context of 115-50","","Agora:Object:Agora XXIX:1659","","","Object","","Hellenistic Pottery and Wheelmade Table Ware | Imported Pottery | Red Wares | Red Wares With West Slope Decoration" "","Agora 29.1, s. 448, p. 409","Agora:PublicationPage:Agora-29.1-448::/Agora/Publications/Agora/Agora 029.1/Agora 029.1 448 (409).png::1528::2048","Cistern","Agora 29","Agora","200-Late 1st B.C.; Late Hellenistic-Byzantine; 120-90 B.C.; 115-50 B.C.; 110-75 B.C.; 200-late 1st B.C.","","Agora:PublicationPage:Agora-29.1-448","","","PublicationPage","","" "","Agora 29.1, s. 447, p. 408","Agora:PublicationPage:Agora-29.1-447::/Agora/Publications/Agora/Agora 029.1/Agora 029.1 447 (408).png::1528::2048","Bruneau, 1991, no. 57 [75-76], pp. 633, 656-658","Agora 29","Agora","Late Hellenistic-Early Roman; 75-end of 1st B.C.; 200 B.C.-1st A.D.; 200-late 1st B.C.","","Agora:PublicationPage:Agora-29.1-447","","","PublicationPage","","" "","Agora 29.1, s. 443, p. 404","Agora:PublicationPage:Agora-29.1-443::/Agora/Publications/Agora/Agora 029.1/Agora 029.1 443 (404).png::1528::2048","Pit","Agora 29","Agora","200-110 B.C.; Hellenistic-Roman; 2nd B.C.-1st half 1st A.D.; 1st quarter 1st B.C.; 5th-1st B.C.; Late Roman; 2nd-1st B.C.","","Agora:PublicationPage:Agora-29.1-443","","","PublicationPage","","" "","Agora 29.1, s. 444, p. 405","Agora:PublicationPage:Agora-29.1-444::/Agora/Publications/Agora/Agora 029.1/Agora 029.1 444 (405).png::1528::2048","Cistern","Agora 29","Agora","Early Roman; 6th-1st B.C.; 2nd half 1st A.D.; 150-110 B.C.; 2nd-3rd A.D.; Roman","","Agora:PublicationPage:Agora-29.1-444","","","PublicationPage","","" "","Agora 9, s. 22, p. 14","Agora:PublicationPage:Agora-9-22::/Agora/Publications/Agora/Agora 009/Agora 009 022 (14).png::1454::2048","Fallmerayer, II, p. 435","Agora 9","Agora","","","Agora:PublicationPage:Agora-9-22","","","PublicationPage","","" "","L 4498","","Lamp Fragments","Two non-joining pieces.; Fragment a), mended from two pieces, preserves part of side and bottom with part of discus and rim and base of nozzle. Foot chipped, hole in floor (probably intentional); some appliqué figures partly missing.; ; Molded foot; broad, flat resting surface. Low, hollow stem with pronounced ridge at junction with body. Groove at point of handle attachment, above which is ovolo below beading. Shoulder above this is rouletted. Groove at junction of upper and lower body. Flaring rim with groove on top. Two upturned, grooved, horizontal handles, round in section, with plastic ribbed leaves at each base and lion head below each attachment. Nine appliqué figures on upper body.; ; Side A: (1) Nude, frontal male, unbearded, moving left, head turned to his left. He grasps an object (branch?) with both hands, resting it on his left shoulder. The object above his left shoulder may be part of this or could represent wings. (2) Nude male walking right, his right arm raised, carrying sack or wineskin over his left shoulder. (3) Frontal female, head turned to her right, holds tall torch in right hand; left arm is by her side, enveloped in drapery.; ; She wears chiton and himation with triangular overfold, the himation drawn over her head (Leto?). (4) Ecstatic maenad dances to left, looking backward over her left shoulder. Her left leg is forward, and she holds up her garment with her right hand. To the right, a small animal (kid?), which she probably holds in her left hand. At right, a figure whose foot and lower leg are preserved (cut out of the appliqué by the potter). A hand rests on the maenad's right shoulder; probably the figure at right was embracing her. (5) Frontal female with head turned to her right, holding phiale in outstretched right hand, tall torch or scepter in left. She wears high-girt chiton with mantle over her head and across her lower body (Demeter?).; ; Side B: (6) Left part of appliqué missing. Frontal Dionysos with long hair, mantle draped around thighs, supported at right by smaller, draped figure (Ariadne or maenad?) facing left and holding his left arm. Figure at left has arm on Dionysos' right shoulder.; ; (7) Bearded satyr walking left playing double pipe; cloak or panther skin falls down his back. (8) Top of figure missing. Legs of figure turned three-quarters to right, apparently wearing short garment; heavy folds of cloak(?) at left. (9) Bearded male moves right vigorously, with left leg raised. He holds a large object over his head with both arms. There is a belt around his hips, and a long cloak falls down his back. Arm visible against his chest at right may be his own lower left arm, supporting the load, or the arm of a second figure. Fine, hard, micaceous, gray to grayish brown fabric (10YR 5/1--5/2); shiny glaze, black to dark gray (5YR 4/1), resting surface and part of underside unglazed.; ; For similar Dionysiac figures on Neoattic marble kraters (none identical to ours) see Fuchs 1959, pls. 15--20, 22, 23, 26. The Leto figure is paralleled in reverse on an appliqué in Pergamon (AvP I, ii, no. 1, p. 256, Beiblatt 32:1). For detailed comment on the relationship of the figures to those known in Pergamene appliqué see PF VII, p. 52; shape, surface decoration, and motifs have convinced Hübner that the piece is not Pergamene. For other gray ware with appliqués see Délos XXVII, D 24--D 27, p. 242, pl. 41; Hobling 1923--1925, pp. 297--309 (Sparta).","Agora","Context of 150-110","","Agora:Object:Agora XXIX:1631","","","Object","","Hellenistic Pottery and Wheelmade Table Ware | Imported Pottery | Gray Wares | Appliqué"
