Broken diagonally above, at left side, and below.; Votive relief with simple fillet and ovolo molding above. Narrow frame at left side. In upper right corner, low relief profile female head facing left and wearing a veil which flutters back behind her. Above her head, and disappearing behind the relief frame, is the upper part of a ladder, two vertical pieces and traces of two horizontal struts visible. In her extended right hand she holds a vase by the foot. The vase compares to late fifth century thurible or incense burners.; White marble with small crystals, probably Pentelic.; Late fifth century B.C. (410-400 B.C. ?).; Similar representations on vases of the early and middle fourth century (cf. Metzger (1951), Les Représentations, pl. VII) identify the scene depicted as Aphrodite descending a ladder, carrying an incense burner. The scenes on the vases have sometimes been connected with the cult of Aphrodite and Adonis (cf. Hauser, ÖJh (1909), pp. 90 ff.; Festschrift Amelung, pp. 262 ff. Most of the area is occupied by the central device; a chariot with four rearing horses driven by Helios, in long chiton and blown-back himation, with radiate head full face (? features not distinct). With one hand he grasps the reins (a curved line disappearing above behind the head of the nearest horse, below behind its shoulder); with the other he reaches forward a rod like an orchestral conductor's baton. The chariot is rather schematic the four-spoked whell being prominent, acurved rail rather indefinite, (worn? not drawn across the figure). The heads and shoulders of the horses are much elongated in height, and somewhat blurred; possibly the die was partly renovated or possibly it slipped in setting. The quadriga is surrounded by a beaded circle, outside which may be read.; Cf. Johnson's Lysippos on evidence for the reconstruction of the ""Chariot of the Sun for the Rhodians"" ascribed by Pliny to Lysippos. He refers to an article by Maiuri in Aer I (1920), p. 133, which publishes four seals similar to ours but inscribed only with a month name (under the horse's feet in an upcurving line; cf.
